Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a comprehensive, staged approach designed to guide proper jaw growth, improve bite alignment, and create space for incoming permanent teeth. Instead of waiting until all adult teeth are present, treatment usually begins between ages 7 and 10, when the jaws are still developing. This proactive method allows Dr. Cohen to correct skeletal and dental issues at the most ideal time for optimal long-term results.
Phase One focuses on correcting jaw growth problems, harmful oral habits, and severe crowding while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. We use orthodontic appliances such as expanders, functional appliances, or limited braces to widen the jaw, guide facial growth, and create adequate space for the erupting permanent teeth. Early intervention can reduce the risk of impacted teeth, excessive protrusion, or uneven facial development.
After Phase One, there is a resting period where the orthodontist closely monitors natural growth and the eruption of permanent teeth. During this phase, no active appliances are usually worn, allowing the mouth to develop on its own while maintaining the improvements already achieved.
Phase Two begins once most or all permanent teeth have come out, typically during the early teenage years. Full braces or clear aligners are used to precisely align teeth, close any remaining spaces, and fine-tune the bite for proper function and aesthetics. This phase completes the treatment process, resulting in a healthy, balanced, and confident smile designed to last a lifetime.
