For Children

There is no exact age for a child to begin orthodontic treatment; however, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation around age seven.

By this age, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, allowing Dr. Cohen to detect jaw growth concerns, crowding, and bite problems before they become more complex. Early diagnosis often makes treatment simpler, more effective, and may reduce the need for surgical intervention later in life.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early orthodontic care allows your orthodontist to:

  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
  • Help develop facial/jaw growth
  • Create space for crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Reduce the severity of the case and subsequent future treatment
  • Correct harmful oral habits and help improve minor speech issues

Signs Your Child May Benefit from an Orthodontic Evaluation

See an orthodontist if you notice the following:

  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
  • Jaws that are too far forward or back
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting
  • Breathing constantly through the mouth
  • Finger or thumb-sucking habits
  • A narrow upper jaw
  • Clicking, popping, or discomfort in the jaw
  • An unbalanced facial appearance
