A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance used to widen the upper jaw to create more space for proper teeth alignment and to correct bite problems such as crossbites and crowding. It works by applying gentle pressure to the upper molars with each adjustment.
Adjustments are usually done at home as instructed by Dr. Cohen. In a well-lit area, have the patient tilt their head slightly back. Insert the provided key fully into the hole of the expander. Push the key toward the back of the mouth until it stops, and a new hole appears. Then, gently push the key back and down toward the tongue to remove it.
The next hole should now be visible for the following adjustment. Always follow Dr. Cohen’s given schedule carefully, as proper use is essential for safe, effective treatment.

In a well-lit area tip the patient’s head back.

Place the key in the hole until it is firmly in place.

Pushing the key towards the back of the mouth, you will notice the fender will rotate and the new hole will appear. The rotation stops when the key meets the back of the expander.

By pushing back and down towards the tongue, remove the key. The next hole for insertion of the key should now be visible.
